Ikkoh Funaki joined the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), which became part of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), where he is currently a Professor. He was continuously involved in electric propulsion development and advanced concepts for spacecraft, including the development of ion thrusters for the Hayabusa series and Hall thruster for the ETS-9.In 2025, he became the director of international strategy and coordination at ISAS/JAXA, responsible for organizing and directing international collaboration in space science and engineering.
